This article is from a FAQ concerning SCO operating
systems. While some of the information may be applicable to any OS,
or any Unix or Linux OS, it may be specific to SCO Xenix, Open
Desktop or Openserver.
There is lots of Linux, Mac OS X and general Unix info elsewhere on
this site: Search this site is the best
way to find anything.
Note: modern versions have boot images on the CD and tools to create the floppies from Windows or Unix platforms. CHECK YOUR CD FIRST. See /SCOFAQ/scotec2.html#installdisk

(contributed by Bela Lubkin)
Someone named Chip is looking for a boot disk for some release of SCO Unix or OpenServer -- I've lost track of the details.
This prompted me to dredge up my old list of FTPable SCO boot disks (couldn't find it via google, I thought they claimed they now had all of USENET back to the beginning?) -- but I found a quote of most of it.
I've updated it by adding some new items, and fixing all the URLs so they point to machines and directories that actually exist as of 2002-02-07. Since this is an external directory of information maintained by other people, it's entirely subject to change.
Herewith, please find a list of boot disks for "SCO" operating systems. It attempts to be comprehensive, but I may have missed a few. If your exact OS flavor is missing, a "nearby" version might work. If multiple images are listed for a particular version, read their cover letters or try them serially.
The URLs generally point directly to the file that contains the boot image; however, you would be wise to look in the same directory for related materials such as cover letters.
Some of the disks listed may in fact be of such specialized purpose that nobody could possibly use them any more...
I expect this to be archived by google and thus searchable for many years to come.

What do you do with these .Z files ... nothing reads them ... rawrite says its not a valid file.

.Z files are compressed. "uncompress" expands them.

What can I expand a .boot file with? - Jeff

Who says it's compressed?
If it is, "file yourfile.boot" will tell you what it is. Rename it appropriately and unpack it. For example:
$ file y
y: compress'd data 16 bits
$ mv y y.Z
$ uncompress y.Z

What do you do with the .n1 files inside the .Z file? Just copy to the floppy?
Tue Aug 28 08:36:20 2007: Subject: TonyLawrence
Yes, though you have to "dd" them.
