Order (or just read more about) Linux and the Unix Philosophy  from Amazon.com

I honestly couldn't read this. I did manage to browse it, which is something more than skimming but a lot less than actually reading.

Hate these ads?

The first few chapters were the worst. First, the author's writing style is pretty flat and uninteresting. But more importantly, this is all old hat, sheesh we know all that, tell me something new - it's boring for anyone who has been around Unix for any length of time.

However, the fact that it couldn't engage me does not mean that it wouldn't be just the thing for someone new to our world. If you don't grok why the Unix/Linux way really is better than the Microsoft way, reading this might open your mind. It might also be a good gift for someone just beginning to learn Linux.

Most of the people reading here can pass on this one.

LinuxUnixPhilosophy :
How can you offer a review of a book you have not read? That is not fair for the author, nor the persons relying on reviews before purchasing. I considered Linux and the UNIX philosophy a great read, and have recommended it to my peers and friends. I have been working with linux/unix for about 10 years now and feel that it is always important to remind yourself if the fundamentals. This is also why I still keep learning perl next to my desk at all times ;-)

Where did you get the impression that I didn't read it? I read it, and this is my opinion of it. You have a different opinion - that's what makes the world go round.

As I said above, I couldn't read it line by line because for me it was too dull. I did read a few chapters in their entirety and browsed the rest, finding nothing to engage me. That's what I said: uninspired writing, and nothing most of us don't already know.

And by the way: you are welcome to submit your own review pointing out all the wonderful stuff I ignored that you liked. I have no objection to publishing disagreement.
