I don't have an answer, but maybe a pointer.  Turn on the kernel
debugger.
Change the N to a Y in the file /etc/conf/sdevice.d/scodb, save and
relink/reboot.
The next time the kernel panics you might have a stack trace that will
display
where the kernel went castors up.
To quit out of the debugger once it is envoked, just type q<enter>,
which will
continue to panic, or reboot() and the system will reboot.

It's been a while but the last time I saw  an alignment fault it was a
hw raid
controller (non IBM HW).  The part that worries me is removing the
supplement
didn't remove the panic, just rebooting with a much older kernel.
good luck, it doesn't sound like a simple fix.
